3.4 – Stage 2 Lesson Plan Template

3.4 – Stage 2 Lesson Plan Template

In Module 2.4 you learned about the students and summer intensive language programs at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB). You applied that learning and your work with the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Benchmarks (Links to an external site.) to complete the first part of your peer microteaching learning episode. Your work in that section was focused on Stage 1 of the Backward Design process as you determined “what students should know and can do.”

Now we are going to work on Stage 2 of our learning episode! This stage is where you will design a performance-based task that students complete as a demonstration of what they know and can do. It is important to note that such tasks can serve either as formative or summative assessments, depending upon how you choose to integrate them. It should be noted, though, that “formative assessments” are a form of “checks for understanding” and should not be graded.

Stage 1

In Module 1.4 you read the Startalk publication, From Paper to Practice (Links to an external site.). This important document elaborates on the various sections of our lesson plan template. You may want to review pages 5 and 6 that specifically address Stage 1 and provide examples of good learning targets. For now, let’s review page 7 which focuses on Stage 2 of our lesson plan.

You’ll notice that the can-do example that appears on this page describes in student-friendly language what students will be able to do at the end of the lesson, in this instance, navigating the public transportation system in Beijing. This is the Stage 1 piece.

Stage 2

Stage 2 then is the proof or evidence that students can perform what was stated as the Stage 1 learning target.

Examples:
From Paper to Practice

In the example given on page 7 of From Paper to Practice (Links to an external site.) you see that this proof or evidence consists of students actually performing or giving directions using the Beijing public transportation system via written text (Intermediate Low Presentational Writing). Note that this is an authentic task as well and one that is likely to be of interest to students.

Mulan Model Student Lesson Plan

In the Mulan Model Student Lesson Plan (Links to an external site.) students meet and greet other students to discover things they like and don’t like (Novice Mid Interpersonal) and show proof of comprehension of their peer responses by completing an interview grid (Novice High Interpretive).
